Coryanthes macrantha is an absolute marvel of the natural world, widely celebrated as one of the most complex, alien-looking, and fascinating species in the entire orchid kingdom. Commonly known as the Bucket Orchid, this extraordinary species has evolved a highly specialized, mechanical pollination mechanism that makes it a legendary centerpiece for any greenhouse or serious private collection.
The massive, bizarre blooms look less like a traditional flower and more like an intricate piece of biological engineering. Hanging downward from long, pendulous spikes, each flower features thin, translucent, sail-like petals that frame an incredibly complex lip. The lip is modified into a smooth, hollow "bucket" topped by a specialized gland that drips a clear, intoxicating fluid. Male euglossine bees, drawn in by a powerful fragrance, lose their footing on the slick rim and fall into the water-filled bucket, where they are safely guided through a single, tight escape tunnel—perfectly gluing the orchid's pollen to their backs as they exit.
Please note: Slight damage, some leaves removed.
Cultivation & Growth Profile
-
Growth Habit: Features deeply grooved, wrinkled, and tapered pseudobulbs topped with soft, heavily pleated, palm-like green foliage. In nature, it shares a unique symbiotic relationship with aggressive ant colonies, which nest in its dense root systems.
-
Bloom Style: Flowers emerge from the base of the pseudobulbs on long, pendulous, hanging spikes that grow straight down. Because of this, it must be grown in an open-mesh basket lined with coconut fiber or loose sphagnum moss so the spikes can easily find their way through the bottom.
-
Fragrance: Intensely fragrant, releasing a powerful, penetrating, and delightfully sweet aroma during the morning hours—a rich blend of fresh wintergreen, mint, and warm vanilla designed to attract pollinators from miles away.
-
Culture Preferences: Thrives in warm, humid conditions with moderate to bright filtered shade (Phalaenopsis to intermediate Cattleya light). Unlike many orchids, Coryanthes have a high metabolism and never want to dry out completely. They require heavy, frequent watering and consistent, light fertilization year-round to support their rapid growth and dramatic floral displays.
For the adventurous grower or connoisseur looking to showcase the ultimate example of evolutionary camouflage and floral engineering, Coryanthes macrantha is an unforgettable, high-impact classic that never fails to drop jaws.
