Dendrobium spectabile var. aureum is an ultra-rare, jaw-dropping color form of one of the most famously bizarre species in the entire Dendrobium genus. While the standard species is celebrated for its wild, alien-like look dressed in dark browns, purples, and tans, the highly coveted aureum (or xanthic) variety strips away all dark anthocyanin pigments. The result is a clean, luminous masterpiece of pure tropical drama.
The large, thick-textured flowers are a triumph of evolutionary architecture, featuring intricately twisted, curled, and heavily crinkled sepals and petals that resemble dancing tongues of flame. In this color form, the petals display a brilliant monochromatic palette of bright apple-green, chartreuse, and lemon-yellow, beautifully set off by an expansive, elongated lip that transitions into a creamy white and sulfur-yellow throat completely free of any dark veining.
-
Growth Habit: A robust, stately Latouria-type grower that develops massive, club-shaped, cane-like pseudobulbs topped with several thick, leathery, evergreen leaves. It forms impressive, long-lived specimens that command immediate attention on any retail bench.
-
Bloom Style: Flowers emerge from the upper nodes of both old and new canes on strong, upright to arching spikes, carrying dozens of long-lasting, waxy blooms. Individual flowers can last for up to two months in pristine condition.
-
Fragrance: Highly fragrant, releasing a sweet, complex, and almost metallic honey-like floral perfume during the peak warmth of the day.
-
Culture Preferences: Thrives in warm, tropical conditions with bright, filtered light (strong Cattleya to partial Vanda conditions) and high humidity. Unlike deciduous Dendrobiums, this Latouria species does not require a winter rest. It wants to stay consistently warm and heavily fertilized year-round while actively growing, preferring an open, coarse, fast-draining medium in clay pots or open wooden baskets where its roots can air out quickly between daily waterings.
